Sisters on the Silver Screen

In 2007 a documentary film called Sisters of Selma: Bearing Witness For Change, directed by Jayasri Hart, told the story of six Catholic Sisters—two Sisters of Loretto, two Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and two Franciscan Sisters of Mary from St. Louis —whose participation in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches for voting rights thrust them into the national spotlight. Their presence, in full habit, garnered wide-spread media attention and helped propel American Catholic sisters into a new era of social justice activism.
